Kansas Department of Agriculture: Communications Intern, Office of the Secretary
I manage the Kansas Department of Agriculture’s social media content, strategies and analytics Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest. My work in creating social media graphics and implementing new strategies has exploded our reach and engagement in addition to helping us be more organized as a communications team. I also write press releases, design marketing materials and have edited and created style guides for the department.
K-State Research & Extension: Graphic Communications Assistant
As the first student to ever serve in this position, I work with our News Media Leader to create image-based communications to effectively tell stories and reach targeted audiences. Through infographic and social media imaging design, I strive to add visual components to messages that increase audience engagement.
K-State First: Learning Assistant for Leadership in Agricultural Advocacy class
April 2014-December 2014
I helped develop the curriculum for the first-ever Agricultural Advocacy class at Kansas State University. In serving in the Learning Assistant position I facilitated students in the classroom, collaborated with lead professors, served as mentor to students and hosted events to connect additional courses with agricultural advocacy topic.
Certified Angus Beef: Industry Information Intern
During my time at Certified Angus Beef I wrote feature stores, news releases, blogs and scripts for video news releases. I traveled extensively for interviews, photos and video for content. I also generated social media posts for Black Ink Basics and was instrumental in a blog redesign.
Kansas Wheat Commission: Communications Intern
October 2012-January 2015
When I began at Kansas Wheat I wrote for our weekly column, The Wheat Scoop, helped with social media management and video production. I also wrote for our quarterly and weekly newsletters and did editorial design. I personally launched our Pinterest page and helped with the promotion and media coverage of the National Festival of Breads baking competition. After being on the job for 10 months my superior left and I independently managed all of the communications for Kansas Wheat Commission and the Kansas Association of Wheat Growers for a 6 month period while we searched for a Director of Communications. After we hired a director, I helped with a complete rebranding, including new logos, two new websites and new communications strategies. Then my roles shifted to social media management, newsletter development, strategic planning and producing our monthly magazine Rediscover Wheat.
Stahlbush Island Farms: Farm Office Intern
At Oregon’s first certified sustainable farm I served under the procurement manager and the plant manager during a busy harvest and processing season. I helped organize, record and increase efficiency of information storage and plant operations. I researched optimal markets for organic products and designed advertisements for agricultural goods.
Oregon FFA Association: Oregon FFA State Officer
March 2011-March 2012
While serving as a role model to agriculture students I facilitated workshops, developed leadership curriculum and traveled extensively to speak at agribusiness and agriculture education events. I built relationships with key stakeholders doing over 150 business and industry visits representing Oregon FFA and serving as an advocate for agricultural education.
Oregon Department of Forestry: GIS Student Worker/Wildfire Dispatcher
July 2009-April 2011
After training myself on how to effectively use ArcMap GIS systems, I created evacuation plan maps for the Central Oregon Fire district and supplemented fire maps during wildfire season. I also served as an overnight and emergency wildfire dispatcher helping maintain the safety of fire fighters in the field and dispatching necessary resources to combat wildfires.
